Van Zyl's collages are about small synchronicities. They remind us of fleeting moments in our lives when things line up just right and when unexpected and meaningful connections are formed. Such junctures are evident in both commonplace and sacred ways -  from fortuitous flashes of beauty among the tediousness of daily struggles to the precious moments when we truly connect with other people. These singular incidents may often remain hidden in the noise of daily life. Van Zyl believes it is the artist’s role to notice such magical occurrences and to call attention to them.

 

The collages are created through an intuitive process of chance and play. The artist begins with inked square backgrounds and then searches through old magazines and books for images that speak to her. Volumes and shapes that form visual and conceptual links are selected and combined in various configurations until they form the right fit. It is thus through an instinctive playfulness that the separate parts conglomerate into new creatures and new sets of meaning.
